Thanks Helen for letting us know about the deletion because I did need to retrieve something. Margot and I had a wonderful time at the Jewish Genealogy conference at the Marriot Marquis in the city... we learned so much... she's still there... I had to get home. Margot found some info on her paternal grandfather. Mostly we attended workshops from 8 am to 6 pm where we learned about where to find records. Incidentally there are tons of records that are being digitized and translated and put online for all to see... it's an ongoing process and depends on $ for translators and purchasing records, etc. We got a lot of search tips but now we need to apply them... you could say we are swimming in information! So we will report whatever we find if anyone is interested. And we will scan some pictures of Betty and Jimmy we have soon. Reply to this

Thanks for calling our attention to the Pearl Harbor Op Ed piece. I somehow missed it but will look online. Unfortunately I don't have any additional information about Lou or Phil during World War II. I always was impressed looking at their photos and I thought again about the great party at Karen's when most of you had the opportunity to see the world's greatest hula dancers... xxx Margot Reply to this

Hi Marty, this is Cathy, the other crazed family history addict! I'm so happy you and Margot got to meet last week. I must thank you for the information on Dora and Tillie Feinstein. I just took a wild guess when I put their name in the IGI and I was so happy when I found their records... I think I was having a non-productive day so that gave me a real boost. I'll have to talk to you some time about that but in the meantime we are thrilled to connect with more long lost relatives. Hmmm I think a reunion may be in order. Does anyone have any ideas about how to do that? Oh and Helen, we just scanned in 15 or 20 photos mostly of Betty, Jimmy and Lou. Do you think that's too much... I had already gleened them from a much larger batch that came from Helenanne... I don't think I can choose... but I don't mind if you do. Should I just send them all to the "whisper" address, or what? These photos must have come from Betty. One goes back to 1925 when she was 19 years old! Please let me know what you think. Also we have a DVD made by Meryl from her parent's wedding 16 mm. film... loads of Simons on that but Margot and I have pretty much identified 90% of the people. Hi MaryAnn. I'm so glad you will find a way to put the film up, so many people would love to see it. Do you know who most of the people are? Many of them are Simons and Blumofes who would love to see themselves or their parents or grandparents. James Simon for instance died the same year that Harry and Frances married and is in the film, eating his soup! Additionally, the Feinstein grandchildren would love to see Tillie and Dora, their granparents. Margot and I have figured out who many of the people are thanks to the help of some of the new relatives we have found. Also the same Rabbi Sender Blumofe and his wife Jenny Simon Blumofe who married Betty in 1929 is also at Frances' wedding. I speak to his grandson, Rabbi David Blumofe who still lives in the Chicago area and has 14 grandchildren. There are a great many Blumofe relatives who would love to see their great and great great grandparents for the first time! Jenny died the very next year in 1952. So you see it was a very important affair in terms of all the relatives who were present. In addition Larry Simon who is 95 and lives near Boston and is the last living Simon relative from that generation would love to see himself and his siblings and cousins... and so would his children and grandchildren. It's a veritable "who's who" of the Simon/Wellikoff family I think! So, I sure wouldn't know how to edit that. Have a great trip... sounds like fun! I don't know about the bike part, though! Oh, I keep forgetting to ask you for the Yiddish version of the autobiography back. When Margot and I went to the International Jewish Genealogy Conference we attended a workshop given by YIVO. They are very interested in seeing the original and have people who will translate, compare and of course preserve the original. So please as soon as possible send it to me so I can take it to YIVO before it falls apart further. It really should be in the hands of conservationists who can control the environment and stabilize it from further deterioration. Please send it in bubble wrap to protect it and keep it dry. Did your friend make any headway with it? Did Daryl finish photographing it? Good luck with the other projects you are working on... you guys are really busy beavers! Love, Cathy Reply to this

Hey Helen, I like what you've done to the website. Haven't had the time to send you the photos of Betty, Jimmy and Lou but I will soon. Margot, Artie and I had a wonderful trip up to the Boston area to meet your 94 year old ?first cousin, once removed, Larry Simon, his wife Rene, his children, Wayne, Jane, and Viv Simon and Viv's son Jarret: 3 generations under one roof! Larry is very sharp, still drives, and cares for his wife who has some sort of organic brain syndrome with Parkinson-like features. Despite that she gave us quite a few chuckles with her running commentary that was witty and appropriate. It's a shame the family lost touch all these years because they are very warm and loving people and I was taken with their devotion to each other. We made a video tape, a voice recording and took some digital photos of them and of some photos in their albums. Larry is the son of James Simon, Mary's brother. So, expect to get some more new photos. Reply to this

Anonymous- we did a videotape interview with some prepared questions and then some "audience" questions. Larry did remember Mary, going to visit her at the house in Brooklyn. Mostly he remembered Lou since they were close in age and Lou had visited him. Uncle James and family lived up in Washington Heights so I think that's one reason why the family did not see each other that frequently. Tried to find out more about the old country but his dad just hadn't talked about it. He did know they came from the town Derevne. James was the only son to go into the Russian army and apparently he did not have a hard time of it- I specifically asked Larry that question. Yes, he had read Mary's autobiography. We have a nice tape, maybe 45 mins. or an hour long, also we played a voice recorder the whole time but have not listened to it yet. Larry's father James was the last to arrive in 1898(due to being in the service). I'm so curious about who you are "Anonymous." (We could play 20 questions!) One more thing, Larry told us that his sister Phyllis (married Jack Simon) was a wonderful poet, and I think Larry also wrote poetry. In Mary's autobio. she wrote that Schleme wrote beautiful poetry and that she still had it at the time, about 1937. Does anyone have any of it? I might have asked that a long time ago or else just thought it... it might have have been in Yiddish, but maybe not. All the Simons apparently spoke english without an accent... I remember hearing that before... (Gertrude's recollections?) We asked Larry how his dad learned english but he didn't know. Thanks for inquiring Anony. Reply to this

Hello, everyone. My name is Pat Gleiberman, and Cathy Wellikoff met me at a library meeting and told me that Gertrude Kritzler, your ancestor, was instrumental in founding the Bellmore Memorial Library, where I work. The library's Reference Coordinator, Judy Opatow, is organizing a scrapbook of local history materials, and this naturally led me to wonder if there were any written memoirs of Gertrude which we might be able to copy and add to our notebook. Cathy suggested that Mary Ann might have memories or documents from that time. Anyway, I really enjoyed visiting your family blog, so even if there are no memoirs for us to read, it was well worth the trip for me! Hi Pat, I remember vividly the work my mother and her group of friends did to start the North Bellmore Public Library. I don't know if the Bellmore and North Bellmore Libraries are separate, but ours was definitely the North Bellmore one. I even wrote a song parody about it for her 70th birthday. She first contacted the Hempstead Library to have the bookmobile stop in North Bellmore. I think it was around 1946 - just after World War II. Then she contacted several friends and neighbors to collect books and donations from the community. The Hempstead Library, I believe, gave them the start of the collection. She arranged with the Fire Dept. to use a large room above the fire truck garage to house the collection. I remember gluing papers on the back pages of the books and stamping each with "Property of North Bellmore Public Library." I believe the library was staffed only by volunteers for the first few years. I'll look through her papers to see if they contain any more details. After starting the library, she and her group of volunteers then started a community center which offered classes in art, dance, and music. These classes were also held over the fire house. If the Bellmore and North Bellmore Libraries are not together, please feel free to pass this information on to someone in North Bellmore. Thanks for bringing these memories back.

If we plan for a 3-day weekend, that would be Aug. 1-3 or Aug. 8-10. Are these dates a conflict for anyone who hopes to attend? Location is still up in the air. I'd like to give you at least three choices. For those coming from other parts of the country it seems that New York State is the most convenient because of the number of direct flights. Washington DC and Florida are other possibilities. Of course, there are wonderful big homes for rent on the Outer Banks, here in North Carolina at lower costs, but getting here might prove difficult. No cruise, some of us get seasick. I will plan for a place that has activities for teens, kids and adults.
